The Data Security Problem
Everyday threats to your privacy and your peace of mind.
Six threats affecting your digital devices, credit and ID cards, keyless car fobs, passports, and any device that connects wirelessly.
The Technology
One Faraday bag. Every signal blocked.
Faraday bags surround your device in a continuous conductive boundary, a sealed barrier that stops wireless signals getting in or out.
The level of shielding depends on the quality of the conductive fabric, the integrity of the seams of both the bag’s outer shell and the Faraday fabric inside, and the design of the closure system.
We stock the two brands that are the most advanced in the world and are used by military, government agencies, forensics and security companies worldwide. The Faraday fabrics used by Mission Darkness and OffGrid are independently certified by Keystone Compliance in the USA to meet strict military standards MIL-STD-188-125-2 and IEEE 299-2006 – essential for military applications. These two brands are trusted by New Zealand government agencies.

EMF & Environmental Sensitivity
Some people are more sensitive to EMF than others.
We take that seriously.
A meaningful proportion of people experience symptoms they associate with everyday exposure to electromagnetic fields from phones, Wi-Fi routers, smart meters, and other wireless devices.
01 · The symptoms
The World Health Organization acknowledges that the symptoms are real, and that for severe cases, the impact on daily life can be substantial. Reported symptoms include headaches, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. Population surveys put the prevalence between three and ten percent.
02 · The science
What remains the subject of active research is the question of mechanism, whether the symptoms are caused directly by EMF exposure or whether the relationship is more complex. The longitudinal research needed to settle causation versus correlation has not yet been done at the scale required.
03 · Our position
We stock these products because the physics is sound and customer feedback has been consistent. Many people find them helpful. The clinical research linking exposure reduction to symptom relief isn’t yet conclusive, so we make no medical claims. We do stand behind the products and the people who choose them.
What is not in dispute is the physics. A Faraday bag stops the device inside it from emitting. A square metre of TitanRF fabric mounted on a wall reduces the RF passing through. These are measurable, independently verified outcomes, separate from any health claim.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions.
Everything you need to know about Faraday bags, shielding fabric, and digital security products.
The IEEE 299-2006 (1 – 40GHz) standard assesses the shielding effectiveness of materials. It provides a methodology for conducting tests evaluating the amount of electromagnetic interference (EMI) entering or leaving electronic devices. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) established this standard to determine the protection level provided by shielding material against EMI.
MIL-STD-188-125 is the United States military standard that defines the testing requirements and performance criteria for High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) protection. For Faraday products (like bags, cases, and tents), compliance guarantees they provide laboratory-verified shielding and survive intense electromagnetic events, and verifies that the product can withstand extreme natural (solar flares) or man-made electromagnetic pulses.
Yes. An electromagnetic pulse, referred to as EMP, is a burst of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation that can occur naturally or be man-made. This powerful surge of energy can cause widespread damage to electronic devices, leading to permanent loss of data, malfunction, or complete failure of the affected equipment. With the increasing threat of EMP attacks and solar flares, protecting electronic devices from this harmful phenomenon is more important than ever.
Both Offgrid and Mission Darkness faraday fabrics used in their products hold the military certification MIL-STD 188-125, ensuring that the products shield against high-altitude electromagnetic pulses (HEMPs) and related occurrences, such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), electrostatic discharges (ESDs), and solar flares. It’s important to be aware of the shielding specifications your Faraday bag offers to ensure it protects against these events, particularly if you want to shield important devices such as hard drives, Crypto wallets, laptops, computers and so on.
Yes. Relay attacks work by amplifying the signal between your key fob and your car. A Faraday pouch creates a sealed conductive barrier around the key, stopping the signal from being intercepted outside the bag. Without that signal, the amplifier has nothing to relay. Our keyfob bags are independently tested to military and IEEE shielding standards and are used by law enforcement and security professionals worldwide. For a deeper explanation of how the physics works, see our How Faraday Works page.
Both are industry leaders in the Faraday and forensics worlds, their Faraday fabrics are independently tested to IEEE 299-2006 and MIL-STD-188-125, and their products are approved for the NZ Defence Force and other government agencies. Mission Darkness offers the largest range of highly durable specialised products, as well as TitanRF Faraday fabrics and accessories. OffGrid offers premium everyday products with sleek designs, as well as data blockers and RFID signal blocking cards for data and signal protection.
This will depend on the type of phone you have and the cellular network that you use. When the phone loses signal inside the bag, it briefly increases transmit power while searching for a connection before dropping to a low-power state. Over a full night this typically uses one to three percent extra battery, similar to being in a low-signal area. However, if your phone aggressively searches for a signal, it can consume extra power. Putting the phone in airplane mode before placing it in the bag eliminates this entirely.
A USB Data Blocker is a small adapter that lets you charge a device from any USB port while physically disconnecting the data pins inside the adapter. This prevents juice jacking attacks at public charging points in airports, hotels, and shared workspaces, where a compromised port can silently extract data from a connected device. Because the protection is hardware-level, no software or configuration can bypass it.
For most phones, a standard phone bag or sleeve is the right fit. For large phones with cases, consider a medium or large size. We have specific bags for tablets and laptops, and have included internal usage dimensions for each product. If you are not sure, send us a message with your device size (LxHxD) and we will confirm the right size.
Yes. The most easiest way to test your Faraday bag is to place a device inside and try to communicate with it using Keyless entry remote test (for car key fobs) or make a call (for phones). Seal the bag properly and wait 5 minutes. Stand next to your car, and try to unlock it - if the car opens, the bag has failed. If an outside call goes through to your phone, the bag is leaking signals. You can also test by trying to ping your phone from a Find My Device app or connect via Bluetooth while inside the bag. For technical buyers, we can supply the independent test certificates for specific products. For more on what shielding standards mean and how laboratory testing works, see our How Faraday Works page.
You can shield any digital or electronic device, from a small USB thumb drive to an entire room.
The devices that are typically shielded include key fobs, mobile phones, smartwatches, tablets, laptops, USB & hard drives, computer towers, Crypto currency hardware, GPS systems, credit cards, passports, access & ID cards, power generators, solar panels, rifles, radios, medical equipment, emergency & survival gear, and any sensitive electronics that need protection from EMPs and static electricity.
Customers who are sensitive to EMFs typically buy products that help eliminate or reduce their exposure from common day-to-day sources. This includes phone pouches to reduce EMFs emitted by the phone while carrying it a handbag or keeping the phone nearby, Faraday blankets to cover the body whilst using digital devices in close proximity, TitanRF Faraday Fabric to make shielding products or Faraday curtains for different areas of the home (cover a smart meter, place behind a bedhead near electrical wiring, or for DIY enclosures around specific emitting devices). Talk to us about your specific situation and we can recommend a starting point.
Yes. TitanRF Faraday Fabric can be mounted on or behind a wall, draped, framed, or cut to shape for DIY shielding projects. It is conductive copper-nickel ripstop, independently tested to IEEE 299-2006 and MIL-STD-188-125, and is the same material used in Mission Darkness forensic enclosures. Common applications are behind smart meter boxes, behind the bedhead on walls that share electrical infrastructure, and for building custom enclosures around specific devices. We stock the fabric in New Zealand in kit sizes from one to sixty linear metres and can advise on quantity.
The best option is to turn off the router when not in use, or permanently disable the Wi-Fi function and instead run Ethernet cables to your laptop or computer. Most modern routers let you schedule the wireless radio on and off through their admin interface, so Wi-Fi can be turned off at night and back on when you want it. Alternatively, if you cannot automatically do this, you can create your own Faraday cover for the router that will help reduce the signal. Some of our customers drape our Faraday blanket over the router. Talk to us if you want to discuss your situation.
