A. Rifkin Co has made locking and tamper-evident transport bags in Pennsylvania since 1892. The Arcolock-7 is part of the bag rather than a padlock fitted to it, and the tamper-evident range seals with a serialised single-use seal.
THE MANUFACTURER
Five generations, one factory.
A. Rifkin Co was established in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1892 and is still owned and run by the same family. Everything is made in a single facility in Hanover Township by around seventy staff, solar powered since 2011, and roughly 96 percent of production is made to order rather than pulled from stock.
The company holds a United States General Services Administration schedule, which is the federal purchasing framework, and supplies government departments, courier and armoured carriers, health providers and electoral authorities.
Two mechanisms run through the range. The Arcolock-7 seven-pin lock, in production in its current form since 1970. And Keyless Security, a built-in sealing chamber that takes a uniquely numbered single-use seal.
ARCOLOCK-7
A lock that is part of the bag.
A seven-pin tumbler lock mechanism, made exclusively for A. Rifkin Co and built into the bag. Widely used by banks and government agencies, it makes Rifkin’s secure transport bags the most reliable on the market when high security is required.
Keyed differently as standard
All Arcolock-7 bags are keyed differently unless otherwise specified, and come standard with two keys, factory sealed in a polyethylene envelope.
3,000 key changes
Up to three thousand independent key changes with no interchanges, and up to two thousand master key combinations within a series.
The key cannot be shut inside
A lock safety feature prevents the key from being removed while the lock is in the open position, making it impossible to accidentally lock your key inside the bag.
Close-tolerance zipper
Close tolerance refers to the number of teeth per inch and the pitch of those teeth. Difficult to pop open to gain access, and virtually impossible to put back together, thus showing evidence of tampering.
KEYLESS SECURITY
The seal number is written on the card it secures.
Keyless Security is a sealing chamber built into the bag. The zipper pull sits inside the chamber, the lid closes over it, and a uniquely numbered single-use seal locks the lid. The routing card sits behind a window that can only be reached from inside the bag, so the record and the contents are sealed together.
Record
Write the date, the destination and the seal number on the routing card, then insert the card into the window from inside the bag.
Seal
Close the zipper fully, push the chamber lid down until it snaps, then press the seal home until both arrowheads click.
Verify
On arrival, check the seal number against the number written on the routing card and inspect the seal and chamber before opening.
Reuse
Break the seal at the indent, lift the lid, remove every fragment. The bag goes back into service. Only the seal is consumed.
Seals are ordered separately. They come in boxes of one hundred, uniquely numbered and non-repeating, in numbered red, numbered blue or barcoded white. The barcoded seals suit a scanned chain of custody. The Arcolite 2100 takes its own seal, so check the model before ordering.
THE RANGE
Built for documents in transit.
These bags get used every day and kept for years, so they are built heavier than you would expect picking one up. Nothing in the range is disposable. It runs from a flat pouch that does the job of an inter-office envelope up to a heavy bag for a daily route. The main choice is whether you want a key or a seal.
